Why are there elections?
This year there are elections for the student representatives in the university council and the department councils. The councils advise Executive Board and the Faculty Boards solicited and unsolicited. For some decisions the boards need permission of the councils. Furthermore, the councils can come with their own proposals. The members of the councils are elected democratically.
What is the University Council?
The University Council (UC) is the central representative body of the TU/e and consists of 9 staff and 9 student members. Through the UC students can ask the attention of the Executive Board for problems and influence current and future policies. This is done through monthly meetings with the Executive Board and of course lobbying. If you want students to come up for your interests, make use of your right to vote!
Why should I vote?
By voting you give a signal to the Execiutive Board that students want to have their voices heard. The higher the voter turnout, the stronger the students in the University Council and Department Councils stand.
By voting for a certain party and/or candidate , you can specify what you find important and ensure that the best candidate(s) represent you.
The TU/e has the highest national voter turnout (49.68% last year) and we want to keep it that way!
What is the PF?
The name PF originates from the dutch Progressieve Fractie (Progressive Group). Nowaday’s the PF is more than just a group in the University Council. The PF is an association of students who want to work at a better TU/e with the focus on education and student affairs. Besides representatives in the University Council, the PF has a board, working groups and calls for gatherings with students if there is need for it.
The association gives the PF continuity, a wider input and more channels than just the University Council to commit itself to student interests. Additionally, the association gives students that are not in the University Council a way to be involved in university policy.
"Progressive" means an active and proactive approach. The PF works from it’s own vision to realize better education and student services at the TU/e for you.
What's the difference between the PF and the other party?
There are two main points on which the PF is different from the other parties in the University Council (UC).
1. The PF is more common with private initiatives
2. The PF has an association
The PF does not wait until the TU/e comes with an idea but tries to come with own and suggestions. Very often, the PF sends notes and letters to the Executive Board which not only highlights issues that could be better, but includes concrete suggestions to tackle the problem. Before sending something to the Executive Board we will discuss it with students and staff in order to get everyone's views on the subject. For example, the PF did not limit itself in only asking for a Multifunctional campus card. On the contrary! The PF had a brainstorm with students in order to come up with a list of wishes for the campus card and the list wth suggestions was passed on to the Executive Board.
Because the PF is not only a group in the University Council but also an association, it has shorter communication channels to the students and vice versa. The PF representatives in the UC receive input from members of the association but are also accountable tot the members of the association. This makes the PF more democratic.
The PF also tries to be present at department discussions to give input from the UC, but also identify problems that may be occurring university wide.
